Explore Still Here: Preserving Our Legacy, a project challenging the misconception that Black history in New Brunswick is negligible. Led by spoken-word poet Thandiwe McCarthy, photographer Gary Weekes, and historian Dr. Mary McCarthy, this presentation traces the project from archival research at the Provincial Archives to interviews with fifteen generational families.
Hear about the challenges of uncovering biased historical records, the transformative process of blending poetry, photography, and oral histories, and the profound impact of meeting families with deep roots in New Brunswick.
Speakers:
Mary McCarthy – Sixth-generation African Canadian, writer, educator, historian, and advocate for Black heritage preservation in New Brunswick. Recognized by Chatelaine as one of “33 Black Canadians Making Change Now.”
Thandiwe McCarthy – Seventh-generation African Canadian, spoken-word poet, writer, and cultural leader. Co-founder of the New Brunswick Black Artists Alliance and recognized by the CBC as one of “20 Black Changemakers in Atlantic Canada.”
Gary Weekes – Fredericton-based documentary filmmaker and photographer. First Black New Brunswicker to hold a solo show at the Beaverbrook, and recognized as a CBC Black Changemaker.
