This major retrospective exhibition will survey the artistic practice of New Brunswick’s Peter Powning from his early production pottery through a remarkable 50-year career trajectory that includes the exploration of a wide diversity of forms and diverse materials, such as glass, clay, cast bronze, stone and steel. An alchemist of sorts, he creates new sculptural forms that seem to stand outside of both time and place. Powning has spent a lifetime pursuing his art, and he has distinguished himself as one of Canada’s most accomplished and prominent visual artists. Through the high caliber of his work and commitment, he holds a unique place in the larger arena of Canadian art.
Curated by John Leroux and organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
