Career Opportunity: Exhibitions Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions, Collections and Curatorial Initiatives, the Exhibitions Manager is responsible for the logistical planning and execution of internal and travelling exhibitions. With curators, the Exhibitions Manager develops exhibition budgets and maintains the Gallery’s exhibition calendar and coordinates all of the gallery’s incoming and outgoing touring exhibitions. The Exhibitions Manager works closely with exhibition curators to ensure that all Gallery exhibitions are planned, mounted, and delivered in a professional manner. The Exhibitions facilities loan requests and agreements, artist contracts and other agreements for exhibitions The Exhibitions Manager coordinates exhibition publications, oversees the production of didactic materials and signage, and works closely with the Collections and Art Preparation team.

MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES:

  • Create and maintain, in coordination with the Director of Exhibitions, Collections and Curatorial Initiatives and Executive Director, a comprehensive, long-term Exhibitions Calendar.
  • Coordinate all in-house exhibitions and permanent collection gallery changes
  • Coordinate all touring exhibitions
  • Create implementation schedules for all exhibitions, establishes milestones for timely completion, and regularly check adherence to deadlines
  • Coordinates all exhibition-related publications between Curators, guest writers, and external editing, design and translation
  • Manages exhibition-related text for wall labels, title walls, panels, credit lines, and other printed exhibition support materials for external editing and design
  • Lead the development of all exhibition budgets and keep projects on schedule and within budget
  • Draft and negotiate artist, guest curator, and any other necessary professional service agreements as well as MOUs and contracts
  • Liaise with the Head Preparator and Curators to prepare galleries for installation and troubleshoot during the installation period
  • Ensure all exhibition contract related payments and invoices to individuals and institutions are provided to Finance office
  • Schedule all museum-wide Exhibition meetings as well as regular check-ins related to the implementation of specific projects and update the Museum calendar accordingly
  • Use project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules, budgets, and communication platforms
  • Continuing professional development as relevant to the Gallery’s operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Liaise with other departments and staff as needed
  • Adhere to the Beaverbrook’s Code of Conduct, Health and Safety Policy, Harassment Policy and all other matters as outlined in the Staff Handbook

  • •This position is primarily in-gallery, but some working from home can be approved at the discretion of the role’s supervisor.

  • Contract guest curators / writers
  • Contract exhibition assistants

ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE

The Exhibitions Manager is a key member of the Curatorial Team, comprising Exhibitions, Collections, and Preparation. Other permanent members of the team include the Registrar, the Head Preparator, the Preparator, the Curator of Canadian Art, and the Curator of Indigenous Art. Contract curatorial, exhibitions, and collections staff will also join the team for specific projects from time to time. The Curatorial Team is overseen by the Director of Exhibitions, Collections, and Curatorial Initiatives.

The Exhibitions Manager will have regular interaction with the Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art, the Education and Public Programming Team, the Development and Institutional Advancement Team, Security, Operations, and Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in an art historical, fine art or museum related discipline or able to demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge and thinking ability gained through experience.

Literacy and Numeracy:

  • Proficient in spoken and written English. Proficiency in spoken and written French will be considered an asset.

EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of contemporary and historical artmaking practices
  • Experience developing exhibitions for presentation and tour
  • Experience working with artists and artists’ representatives or estates
  • Knowledge of professional museum practices and ethics
  • Experience with creating and managing budgets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, in particular Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel and collection management systems.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of and interest in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and its Collection
  • Good working relationships with a range of contacts within museums and the industry.

LOCATION: Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, NB

STATUS: Permanent/Full-time (36.25 hours per week)

SALARY RANGE: $60,000 - $65,000 per year
