The Beaverbrook Art Gallery Opens Three New Exhibitions

July 24, 2025

(Fredericton, NB) – The Beaverbrook Art Gallery announces the opening of three new exhibitions this summer, highlighting a range of artistic practices from monumental landscape painting to textile-based sculpture and poetic reflections on place. The public is invited to attend the Summer Exhibitions Opening Reception on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM, where the artists and curators will be present.

Stephen Hutchings: Theatre of Trees, Denise Richard: Trinket, and John Fox: A Painter in Venice each offer a unique lens through which to explore nature, memory, material culture, and place. The reception offers visitors a first look at these powerful exhibitions while enjoying light nibbles, a cash bar, and complimentary themed beverages for members, inspired by the luminous evenings of Venice.

Organized by the Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Stephen Hutchings: Theatre of Trees presents a sweeping exploration of the artist’s decades-long practice. Centered on a monumental 40-foot painting of a fallen tree, the exhibition becomes a meditation on life cycles, memory, and the emotional power of the natural world. Hutchings’ layered surfaces and masterful use of light and shadow create what he describes as “theatre, an immersive space that evokes stillness, loss, and reverence, inviting viewers into a reflective engagement with the natural environment.

Also organized by the Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art, Trinket by New Brunswick artist Denise Richard repurposes materials drawn from fast fashion and mass-produced consumer goods to create whimsical yet socially charged sculptural works. By transforming plastic trinkets and textile scraps into richly textured forms, Richard critiques the environmental cost of excess and invites viewers to reconsider what we value, and discard, in today’s culture.

John Fox: A Painter in Venice, curated by Sandra Paikowsky and John Leroux, showcases the artist’s deep connection to the city of Venice, where he painted annually for more than fifty years. Through luminous watercolours, atmospheric oil paintings, and evocative drawings, Fox captures the interplay of light, water, and architecture that defined his Venetian vision. This exhibition reflects a lifetime of creative exploration in one of the world’s most artistically storied cities.

“These three exhibitions offer distinct and moving perspectives on how artists engage with their environments, materials, and histories,” says Bernard Doucet, Executive Director and CEO of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. “It’s especially exciting to see these Atlantic exhibitions alongside an artist from Montreal, highlighting both regional depth and broader connections. The Beaverbrook is extremely encouraged to see the Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art continue to open new exhibitions that highlight the vital work of Atlantic Canadian artists. Their voices are essential to the cultural landscape, and these exhibitions celebrate the creativity and depth of artistic practice in our region.”

The opening reception on July 26 will be a chance for guests to meet the artists and curators in person, explore the exhibitions, and enjoy refreshments in the company of fellow art enthusiasts. Admission is free for members; regular admission rates apply for all other guests.
