Causerie d’artiste: Shane Perley-Dutcher

22 juin 202322 juin 2023

22 juin 18 H 30: Join Shane Perley-Dutcher for an artist talk.  The event will start with an opening prayer from Wolastoqewi Kci-Sakom Spasaqsit Possesom (Ron Tremblay), and an opening address and a welcome song with Elder, Dr Maggie Paul. Shane will discuss various facets of his weaving practice, the importance of artistic mentorship throughout his career, examining colonial narratives placed onto Indigenous histories and the truths behind "Reconciliation."

Shane Perley-Dutcher is a Wolastoqewi (Maliseet) mixed media artist from Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) in New Brunswick. He trained at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, earning a Diploma in both Native Art Studies and Jewellery and graduating with honours and distinctions. Shane draws his design inspiration from Wolastoqiyik traditional knowledge and contemporary aesthetics. In a textile or maker sense, a reweave means to repair damages on a gap or hole. The term "reweaving" throughout Reweaving the Basket implies that the artist has undergone unlearning and then relearning various facets of his identity and history. Shane analyzes and repairs the metaphorical gaps in knowledge systems by listening and learning from elders to better align his sense of self as skicinuwok (a Native person).
