Artist Talk: Judy Blake

25 mai 202325 mai 2023

May 25 at 6:30 PM: Join Judy Blake as she speaks on her creative process for her exhibition, Seed Vessels.

Judy Blake has been working with clay since the mid 1970’s. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in many private and public collections such as Canada House, London, UK as well as CollectionsNB and the NB Museum. Judy taught for several years in the Ceramics department at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. She experiments extensively with burnished, unglazed smoke-firing methods and is one of a small number of Canadians using these techniques. Judy is one of 13 ceramic artists to be invited to participate in a national exhibition called “Women in Clay”at the Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery in London Ontario in August 2023. She has received many grants and awards and has had numerous solo exhibitions. Judy Blake maintains a studio practice in Lincoln, New Brunswick.

In the exhibition Seed Vessels, we witness the beauty and power of Judy Blake’s transformative ceramic art practice to enchant and enrich. Provocative, organic and emergent for this gallery gathering we invite attendants to experience Judy and her work in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Meandering through the exhibition we anticipate conversations and questions surrounding how she addresses perennial themes in her work: art and nature, the technical and spiritual. For that evening only, Judy will make available some of her treasured tools, materials and seed pods in progress for us to see, touch and feel. John and Jenn will be on hand to answer questions regarding their work as co-curators, including behind-the-scenes creative decision making and problem solving they encountered designing and installing the exhibition.
