Sunday, August 24 3:00 - 4:00pm, join us for an afternoon of spectacular contemporary art and music at the Beaverbrook! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spirit of Stephen Hutchings\u2019 exhibition Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des arbres<\/em>, the Elm City String Quartet will perform a selection of contemporary string quartets inspired by nature. The performance will feature the premiere of a new quartet by Aster Hutchings, a Canadian composer based in Calgary. The concert will also include Richard Reed Parry\u2019s (of the band Arcade Fire) contemplative piece,\u202fMusic for Heart and Breath,<\/em>\u202fand two beautiful works by Caroline Shaw -\u202fPlan & Elevation<\/em>\u202fand\u202fEvergreen. <\/em> \u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 2019, the Elm City String Quartet was brought together by their passion for chamber music and a desire to share their love of quartet repertoire with their home town of Fredericton.\u202fWith Victor Vivas and Mercedes Salazar on violin, Mark Kleyn on viola, and Emily Kennedy on cello, the ECSQ\u2019s exciting and broad programming pairs works by today\u2019s composers alongside celebrated quartet classics.\u202fTheir first performance was a memorable evening in a small art gallery that was so packed, there were children sitting on the floor between their music stands.\u202fSince then, the quartet has been captivating New Brunswick communities with their broad programming and charismatic playing.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named after Fredericton\u2019s long-standing moniker, the individuals in the Elm City String Quartet come from a variety of musical backgrounds.\u202fSome perform in indie bands and compose multimedia works; some are renowned international pedagogues; but all are passionate chamber music players, Sistema NB Teaching Artists, and are active teachers in their community.\u202fThe quartet, being a versatile group, has performed in art galleries, churches, and even small house concerts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
