The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is now accepting applications for the third annual Theodore Prize
(Fredericton, New Brunswick, September 8, 2025) – The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is excited to announce that in collaboration with the Throop Family Foundation, it is now accepting applications from Atlantic Canadian visual artists for the third annual Theodore Prize.
Issu d'un désir de redonner à la communauté des arts visuels du Canada atlantique, le prix Theodore est nommé en l'honneur d'un membre spécial de la famille Throop qui a été un exemple de générosité et de bonne volonté. Administré par le Musée des beaux-arts Beaverbrook, le Prix Théodore est une récompense annuelle de 20 000 $, attribuée à un artiste du Canada atlantique dont les œuvres témoignent d'un haut niveau d'excellence artistique et créative, d'une maîtrise du médium utilisé par l'artiste et d'un niveau d'estime reconnu par la communauté des conservateurs et des galeries du Canada atlantique.

The Theodore Prize will be juried by three arts professionals, including one member of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery curatorial staff and one representative each from two other Atlantic Canadian public art galleries or post-secondary art institutions. Members of the jury will be announced with the announcement of the winner of the prize.
The winner of the second annual Theodore Prize will be announced on November 20, 2025.

Le Musée des beaux-arts Beaverbrook annonce l'ouverture de trois nouvelles expositions cet été, mettant en vedette un éventail de pratiques artistiques allant de la peinture de paysages monumentaux à la sculpture textile en passant par des réflexions poétiques sur le lieu. Le public est invité à assister à la réception d'ouverture des expositions estivales le samedi 26 juillet 2025, de 15 h 30 à 17 h 30, en présence des artistes et des conservateurs.
Le théâtre des arbres de Stephen Hutchings, Denise Richard : Pacotille, et John Fox : un peintre à Venise offrent chacun une perspective unique pour explorer la nature, la mémoire, la culture matérielle et le lieu. La réception permettra aux visiteurs de découvrir en avant-première ces expositions saisissantes tout en profitant de collations légères, d'un bar payant et de boissons thématiques gratuites pour les membres, inspirées des soirées lumineuses de Venise.
Organisée par le Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art du Musée des beaux-arts Beaverbrook, Le théâtre des arbres de Stephen Hutchings présente une exploration approfondie de la pratique artistique de l'artiste depuis plusieurs décennies. Centrée sur une peinture monumentale de 12 mètres représentant un arbre tombé, l'exposition devient une méditation sur les cycles de la vie, la mémoire et le pouvoir émotionnel du monde naturel. Les surfaces stratifiées de Hutchings et son utilisation magistrale de la lumière et de l'ombre créent ce qu'il décrit comme « un théâtre, un espace immersif qui évoque le calme, la perte et le respect, invitant les spectateurs à s'engager dans une réflexion sur l'environnement naturel ».
Également organisée par le Marion McCain Institute for Atlantic Canadian Art, Pacotille de l'artiste néo-brunswickoise Denise Richard réutilise des matériaux issus de la mode éphémère et des biens de consommation de masse pour créer des œuvres sculpturales fantaisistes mais socialement engagées. En transformant des bibelots en plastique et des chutes de tissu en formes richement texturées, Richard critique le coût environnemental de l'excès et invite les spectateurs à reconsidérer ce que nous valorisons et ce que nous rejetons dans la culture actuelle.
John Fox : un peintre à Venise, organisée par Sandra Paikowsky et John Leroux, met en valeur le lien profond qui unit l'artiste à la ville de Venise, où il a peint chaque année pendant plus de cinquante ans. À travers des aquarelles lumineuses, des peintures à l'huile atmosphériques et des dessins évocateurs, Fox capture l'interaction entre la lumière, l'eau et l'architecture qui a défini sa vision vénitienne. Cette exposition reflète une vie entière d'exploration créative dans l'une des villes les plus riches en histoire artistique au monde.
« Ces trois expositions offrent des perspectives distinctes et émouvantes sur la manière dont les artistes interagissent avec leur environnement, leurs matériaux et leur histoire », explique Bernard Doucet, directeur général et PDG au Musée des beaux-arts Beaverbrook. « Il est particulièrement passionnant de voir ces expositions atlantiques aux côtés d'un artiste de Montréal, mettant en évidence à la fois la richesse régionale et les connexions plus larges. La réception d'ouverture, le 26 juillet, sera l'occasion pour les invités de rencontrer les artistes et les conservateurs en personne, d'explorer les expositions et de profiter d'un rafraîchissement en compagnie d'autres amateurs d'art. We are thrilled to announce that Laura Ritchie has joined the Beaverbrook Art Gallery as our new Director of Institutional Advancement.
A seasoned curator and art consultant, Laura brings over 20 years of experience to this pivotal role. Originally from Saint John, NB, Laura holds a BA and MA in Art History from Mount Allison University and Western University, respectively. She is a fellow of the prestigious Getty Leadership Institute’s NextGen program, which prepares the next generation of museum leaders.
Throughout her career, Laura has held key positions in prominent Canadian art organizations, including the MSVU Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Alberta, Kelowna Art Gallery, and many others, including at the Musée des beaux-arts Beaverbrook. Notably, she served as the Director of MSVU Art Gallery in Halifax and as the Atlantic Region Juror for the Sobey Art Award in 2022. Her broad expertise spans collections, exhibitions, administration, and curatorial work, as well as building and maintaining key donor relationships.
In her new role, Laura will oversee crucial functions such as grant writing, sponsorship acquisition, fundraising events, and expanding the gallery’s membership program. She will also strengthen partnerships with major donors and stakeholders to secure critical funding for the gallery’s ongoing programs and initiatives.
Laura’s passion for the Beaverbrook Art Gallery runs deep. She began her career at the gallery in 2005, working as Registrar, and has since collaborated on several projects with the institution. Her ongoing commitment to the gallery’s mission and growth makes her the perfect fit to lead this vital work in the coming years.

Beaverbrook Art Gallery Unveils Major Expansion of Art Collection, one of the largest One-Time Purchases since Opening in 1959
(Fredericton, NB, May 14, 2024) – The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is thrilled to announce the expansion to its permanent art collection, marking one of the most significant acquisitions of Canadian art since its inception. This exciting acquisition of more than 30 artworks underscores the gallery's commitment to growing its collection in a meaningful way by increasing its offerings of contemporary and historical Indigenous, Canadian, and Atlantic artworks.
Curated with the intention of growing the collection of artworks in areas that the gallery has lacked, the expanded collection showcases a breathtaking array of contemporary artworks spanning various mediums, styles, and perspectives. Among the remarkable additions to the Beaverbrook's expanded collection are four standout artworks that help round out the gallery’s collection:

(Fredericton, NB, April 10, 2024) – Lovers of Canadian art will be thrilled to learn that the blockbuster exhibition Tom Thomson: étoile du Nord is set to travel to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in November of this year, the only venue for this exhibition in Atlantic Canada. Opening to the public on November 10, 2024, this magnificent exhibition presents Thomson’s finest works, incomparable treasures of Canadian art.
“We are so grateful to all our many lenders for helping us to make the most of this wonderful occasion,“ says Sarah Milroy, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. ”Our own holdings of Thomson are very strong at the McMichael, but now we can enjoy these works in the fullest and best context, and with the expertise of so many wonderful contributing scholars and writers. This is a true symphony of voices.”
Organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, this exhibition focuses on the artist’s small en plein air oil paintings, also known as oil sketches, of which he is the supreme master. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to delve into Thomson's remarkable three-year period of primary productivity -- from 1914 to 1917 -- with more than 100 paintings on display.
“Thomson’s contributions to Canadian art are immeasurable, and this exhibition is a tribute to his enduring legacy. Through his vivid depictions of the Canadian landscape, Thomson continues to inspire and captivate audiences in Canada and around the world.” Says Ray Cronin, Curator of Canadian Art at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
In addition to the artwork on display, Tom Thomson: étoile du Nord will feature interactive elements through educational programming, with a variety of activities available for visitors of all ages. From guided tours to hands-on workshops, visitors will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Thomson’s artistic process and the cultural significance of his art.
“As the only host of this blockbuster exhibition in Atlantic Canada, we are thrilled to present Tom Thomson: étoile du Nord at the Beaverbrook,” says Tom Smart, Director of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. “This major retrospective of Thomson’s work with accompanying programming and events is sure to inspire all our visitors.”
