Stephen Hutchings – Landscape Tales

Stephen Hutchings (Canadian, b. 1948) Tree (Landscapes for the end of time), 2010. Oil and charcoal on canvas, 243.8 x 548.6 cm. Gift of the Artist.

June 2 - October 14, 2018    |    Regular Exhibition

This exhibition presents the wide range of Stephen Hutchings’s subjects and themes. From early prints of bushes, to a recent video that imagines conceptual landscapes, Hutchings’s art evokes the terrain of the “inscape,” not simply the physical landscape we normally consider. The exhibition is accompanied by a book by the artist weaving stories about his past, his methodology, and his experiences in the field that, together with the exhibition, all spin a magical quality around the very notion and genre of what constitutes a landscape.

Curated by John Leroux and organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery with the support of Allison and Clare McCain.
