Curator Crunch: The Other Dali

Sept 11: The roots of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery owning the 1957 Santiago el Grande go back to the late 1940s, when Sir James Dunn met Salvador Dali in New York City. The New Brunswick-born future donor of this work was initially unimpressed with Dali, but the relationship would eventually lead to one of the artist’s most significant and memorable portraits: La Turbie: Sir James Dunn, completed in 1949. Often overshadowed by its mammoth blue neighbour, La Turbie has Dunn dressed in a gold robe, evoking the spirit of none other than Julius Ceasar.

Thursday night art class: Thursday, 7:00- 9:00 pm. All skill levels are welcome, ages 16+. Cost is $8 for members, $15 per session for non-members; materials are included. Please register by calling 458-2028.

Sept 12: Lawrence Peters will explore the many worlds of James Wilson Morrice. Morrice enjoyed the life of a “flaneur”, or an observer of the greatest flowering of modern art in France: impressionism. Be inspired by Morrice’s use and appreciation of the café as artistic scene, as you create your own pochades of café scenes at the gallery.

Art for Tots: Fridays from 10:00- 10:45 am. Cost is free for members, $10 per session for non-members; materials are included. Please register by calling 458-2028.
